David Chytraeus died in 1600 -- the last outstanding student of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon. He was one of the authors of the Formula of Concord, which brought peace to the divided Lutheran Church. A professor at the University of Rostock in northern Germany most of his life, Chytraeus was a prolific writer. Chytraeus views the theme of sacrifice from various perspectives. With him we look at the sacrifices of the Old Testament, the perfect sacrifice of Christ, the priesthood of all believers, and Christian life as a continual thank offering, and the Roman Catholic concept of the Mass as a sacrifice.
